Olympic gold rower Eric Murray will court controversy in the next few days, to show his support for changing the flag.

Murray has confirmed he's going to wear one of the alternative flag designs at the Rowing World Championships.

His personal favourite features a silver fern, and the current Southern Star.

Murray said the flag represents New Zealand in the sporting world and it needs to be unique.
