Family members of a man who died in the Erebus aircraft disaster in the Antarctic in November 1979 say a proposed national memorial in Auckland is in poor taste.
There's due to be a turning-of-the-sod ceremony in late November for the memorial, which will be at the Parnell Rose Gardens.
Six locals are calling for consent to be delayed so there can be more consultation.
Jo Malcolm, whose father-in-law died in the air crash, says the families will be left with a concrete runway that takes flight and falls off a cliff.
She says there'll also be sounds of Antarctica.
Malcolm says it's not very healing and is quite hurtful.
