UPDATED 1.53PM: Pole-vaulter Eliza McCartney has won a remarkable bronze medal for New Zealand.
McCartney was the youngest in the field by five years, but showed a composure and maturity far beyond her 19 years.
She didn’t miss a vault until the bar was raised to 4.85metres, and all those clear jumps counted in the end as Australian rival Alana Boyd also missed all three at that mark, giving McCartney the bronze medal.
The rise of the Auckland teen had been rapid this year, but this is meteoric, a staggering performance from New Zealand’s latest athletics star.
