A Dunedin hunter faces a six-week wait to hear if he will have to pay the costs of putting out a fire he said he didn't start.
An Otago Rural Fire Service investigation into fire in Kurow in January found that Tom Dodds caused the fire, without malicious intention.
Dodds said he didn't do it, but was given an invoice for $60,000 which was due on Wednesday.
The Otago Rural Fire Service has withdrawn the invoice, and given their investigation to the National Rural Fire Service.
National Rural Fire Authority officer Kevin O'Connor said it's a lengthy procedure.
"We''ll go through that. We'll have a look at it. We'll get some legal advice on it and we'll just determine what the action we take from here on in is."
If Dodds is innocent, the money will be reimbursed through a rural firefighting fund made up of fire insurance levies.
