Upset in South Auckland over a decision to slash spending on security cameras in town centres.

Auckland Council has cut almost $30,000 in spending on CCTV cameras in Manurewa and Otara-Papatoetoe.

That's despite residents raising concerns about public safety.

Ex-police minister and Manurewa Local Board member George Hawkins says it's a case of the council failing its people.

"One of the council's main responsibilities is to guard the interests and safety of its citizens."

Hawkins says CCTV has helped give some peace of mind to residents worried about their safety.

"And of course CCTV has cut down crime in South Auckland and Manurewa."

The cash-strapped council is cutting $300 million in spending this financial year.
