The Government is seeking more details as serious allegations are aired about practices around the export of swamp kauri.
New Zealand First and the Greens claim restrictions on the export of the logs are being sidestepped and authorities are failing to police the industry properly.
Green MP Eugenie Sage says the Ministry for Primary Industries is failing to uphold and enforce the law and she's demanding its minister, Nathan Guy, take action.
"What action will the minister take to tighten loop holes that have seen the illegal export of ancient swamp Kauri logs [and] the plunder of Northland wetlands?"
But Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy contends his department takes its responsibilities very seriously.
"Yesterday I requested further advice from MPI on improvements that can be made in managing the milling and exporting of swamp Kauri."
