Rugby star Dan Carter's wife Honor has posted a cryptic message on Twitter.

The former Black Sticks player's tweet reads "I refuse to be a shadow to my husband's life, hashtag watch this space", accompanied by a close-up black and white photo of her face.

The Carters have two sons, Marco and Fox, and live in France, where the former All Black plays for the Racing 92 club in Paris.

A handful of people have replied to 33-year-old Honor Carter's tweet with encouraging messages, one reading 'behind every good man is a great woman'.

The Carters married in 2011.
