Lorde, Sol3 Mio, Eleanor Catton, Anna Smaill and Jemaine Clement are proving to be big names and big money.

A new report from industry body WeCreate shows creative industries added added more than $3.8 billion to GDP in 2014.

Chairwoman Paula Browning said the country needs to support more exportable homegrown talent.

"We're looking to make sure the industries and framework that they are operating in and are all set to make more successes like that in the future."

The report found more than 40,000 people work in the creative sector and related industries.

It also reveals that while New Zealand is exporting less dairy, the country's creative industries are looking to export more.

Several local creations are proving a hit overseas, including films like What We Do In The Shadows and video games like Path of Exile.

Paula Browning said the industry is trying to sell more products overseas.

"Creative industries do really well locally but its the export revenue and innovation growth that we're really interested in."
