Christchurch Polytechnic is relieved to finally hear it will be merged with Aoraki Polytechnic.
After 18 months of turmoil the decision's been announced by Minister Steven Joyce.
The new facility will open next year.
CPIT CEO Kay Giles said it's positive for Canterbury.
"Strong side tertiary education institution for the whole of Canterbury can only be a good thing."
She said it will take a lot of work.
Steven Joyce said the majority of Aoraki staff will be transferred into the legal entity of CPIT.
He said some roles may combine to be done by one person, but this wasn't the driver behind the merger.
