Live: 20 new community cases in Auckland, Bloomfield and Robertson want higher rates of Covid-19 testing

Deputy Prime Minster Grant Roberson and Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield gave an update on today's Covid-19 case numbers and also an update on the terror attack that occurred at New Lynn Countdown.

  • There are 20 cases all in Auckland, bringing the total outbreak to 801, 79 cases are recovered, bring active cases to 722 
  • 6 cases were potentially infectious in the community 
  • Bloomfield said ongoing investigations show the total number of unlinked cases has fallen from 58 last Sunday to 30 today. 
  • 38 are in hospital, 6 in ICU with 4 being ventilated 
  • Bloomfield expressed his personal condolences to the family of the woman who died in North Shore hospital (announced yesterday) 
  • Bloomfield says it’s is important people get tested to give further confidence that all cases in the community have been identified 
  • Robertson seconded this saying they want to see an increase in testing to give them the confidence that Delta is under control  
  • 38,120 individuals in the contact tracing system since 9am this morning. Of very close contacts, 99 percent have been followed up by contact tracers, and 90 percent have had a test. 
  • Over 77,000 number of vaccines were done yesterday 
  • Over 9032 Covid tests were processed yesterday 
  • There were no unexpected detections to report from ESR in wastewater testing. Covid-19 was also detected in Rotorua sample on Thursday, but this was deemed expected because there is a case in MIQ in the area. 
  • There are 1.9m future vaccine bookings online 
  • Deputy Prime Minster Grant Robertson wished people a happy Father's Day and also acknowledged how difficult it can be for those who have lost someone 
  • He also wished his mother and Chris Hipkins a happy birthday 
  • Robertson paid tribute to essential workers who responded to Friday's terrorist attack. He acknowledges health staff, supermarket workers, police and the SAS. 
  • Bloomfield said there are three people in ICU in critical but stable condition in Auckland City Hospital following the terrorist attack
