One of the big retailers is defending its decision to reintroduce fireworks.

Groups including the SPCA have voiced concern at the number of outlets selling fireworks this year.

Progressive Enterprises banned fireworks from its supermarkets seven years ago, with support from the SPCA.

At the time, it said the safety risks outweigh the benefits.

A spokeswoman for Countdown says the decision to reintroduce a fireworks range has been in response to customer demand.

She says R18 checks help ensure safe fireworks sales, though such checks were also in place before the ban.
