Progressive Enterprises banned fireworks from its supermarkets seven years ago, with support from the SPCA.
At the time, it said the safety risks outweigh the benefits.
A spokeswoman for Countdown says the decision to reintroduce a fireworks range has been in response to customer demand.
She says R18 checks help ensure safe fireworks sales, though such checks were also in place before the ban.
