Updated 2.24pm: A Coromandel group is challenging plans to mine the Karangahake Mountain in the Coromandel.
Protect Karangahake is lodging a claim in the High Court today saying there wasn't enough public consultation around the granted resource consent.
The group say the council believed effects on the environment and the public caused by the mine would be minor, and therefore didn't need public consultation.
Spokesperson Duncan Shearer says they have proof the effects would be significant enough to force change.
"We believe that we have gathered evidence and can prove that as the effects are not minor, the consent should be looked into."
He believes they didn't properly assess possible impactsof water contamination on the Waitawheta River.
The group say 80,000 people visit the area every year to enjoy recreational activities.
