UPDATED 3:50pm: Two climbers have been successfully rescued from Mount Tasman this afternoon.

It was originally believed there were three climbers who had become stuck 50 metres from the summit in the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.

But police spokeswoman Lisa-Marie Brooks says they had incorrect information.

The 28 and 30 year-olds, both from Queenstown, were winched off the mountain just after 3:30pm.

The men had used their cellphone to alert emergency series that they had become trapped by ice when weather started to deteriorate.

Both have been taken to Mount Cook village.
