Pope Francis has appointed the next Bishop of Christchurch.
Father Paul Martin, 50, will take up the position as the tenth Bishop of Christchurch and succeeds Bishop Barry Jones, who died in February 2016.
The Bishop-elect, who is originally from Hastings, studied theology and arts at Victoria University in Wellington, and did further study to become a teacher.
He taught in schools in Whangarei, Wellington and Christchurch, focusing on English and religious studies.
"I'd like to express what a privilege it is to be chosen to serve in the Diocese of Christchurch as Bishop, following in the footsteps of those before me," he said.
His ordination is expected to take place early next year.
