More than 100 writers, thinkers, commentators, and performers will descend on Christchurch this evening, for the opening night of 'WORD' writers and readers festival.
The week-long festival will play host to around 70 events, some of which are already sold out.
Literary director Rachael King says this year's programme offers the most variety in the show's 17-year history.
"The festival's much bigger so we're able to actually incorporate a lot more this time than we ever have before."
The festival will open with the launch of a Cardboard Cathedral book, featuring an appearance from the architect who designed it.
