Christchurch landowners fight for fairer compensation

Updated 2:25pm: CERA says it's more than happy to negotiate with landowners, who've been left high and dry after the authority compulsorily acquired their land.

Some landowners have had to vacate their properties to make way for key anchor projects.

Most took up a 'take it or leave it' offer by the crown, but some refused, claiming they'd been offered an unfair deal.

The owners of 11 properties still haven't received a cent in compensation.

But a CERA spokesperson says it can't even consider making a part-payment to those landowners, unless they're willing to negotiate.

The crown has acquired most of the land it needs for key anchor projects voluntarily, but some landowners have refused to settle.

That's meant CERA has had to compulsorily acquire some properties.

Ernest Duval from the group City Owners Rebuild Entity says some owners are now planning to go through a tribunal hearing process.

"Many of the land owners who have had their land compulsory acquired, I think, have been unsatisfied with the offer they've received and feel more comfortable being in a structured environment to establish value."
