Updated 1.33pm: The Christchurch City Council has won back its building consent accreditation.

International Accreditation New Zealand has confirmed the local body once again meets the requirements.

The council was stripped of its accreditation a year and a half ago.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel says getting back accreditation was the best early Christmas present they could have got.

"I'm very proud of the work that has been completed. I have every confidence that not only will we be able to hold on to our accreditation, but we will become the building consent exemplar for all of New Zealand."

The government appointed a Crown manager to run the council's building department after International Accreditation New Zealand revoked the accreditation.

Building and Construction Minister Nick Smith is delighted the council's got its power back.

"It's absolutely crucial for Christchurch, not only that the building consenting process is done at pace, but also that it is done with quality so we don't get flawed buildings like the CTV."
