Children who play online video games do better at school, while those who use social media do worse.

A survey of the Program for International Student Assessment test results of 12,000 Australian high school students has found students who play video games every day score better in maths, reading and science than those who don't.

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology study, published in the International Journal of Communication, also found those who use social media every day score worse than those who don't.

The survey shows correlations, but does not prove video games cause better test scores.

However, New Zealand Herald video gaming blogger Siobhan Keogh told Kerre McIvor and Mark Dye there is evidence video gamers are better at learning skills.

She said some studies suggest story-based video games can help people with intellectual disabilities learn social skills they might otherwise struggle to learn.

Ms Keogh said gamers have also been shown to be better drivers and surgeons.
