A five-year-old child has died after a “freak accident” at an Upper Hutt property.
Police were called to the residential property in Kaitoke, Upper Hutt, shortly after 6pm on Monday.
A spokesperson for the family told the Herald he and his partner were present when the “tragic motor vehicle accident” occurred.
“My partner and I tried to resuscitate the boy but I am of the mind that he had passed away immediately,” he said.
“By the time the ambulance got there he was gone. These tragedies happen, there’s no rhyme or reason to it.”
Police confirmed an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
Police were offering support to the family involved during this difficult time, the spokesperson said.
“The death will be referred to the Coroner.”
