Changes to contracts in "best interest" ahead of AFFCO strike

AFFCO has argued changes to employment contracts are in employees' best interests.

The statement comes after failed negotiations last week led to the Meat Workers Union organising a strike next Monday and Tuesday.

AFFCO General Manager Rowan Ogg admits he's disappointed with the decision to strike, but said it was expected. He reports the company's aim has always been to preserve jobs and keep job sustainability.

"It's a competitive industry we're in and the best thing we can do for all of our staff is to have workplace agreements that provide more opportunity for better earnings and longer seasons."

From his understanding Mr Ogg believes 90 percent of the workforce will show up for work next week.

"Less than a quarter of our workforce are union members and the information we have is that only a few at each site that have voted to strike and most want to get on and work."

He said declining stock numbers and increasing over-capacity in the industry had lead to the changes the union are unhappy with.
