UPDATED: 4.02PM Scrapping Queen's Birthday or Guy Fawkes is being suggested, to make room for a day commemorating the New Zealand Land Wars.
Tainui today hosted a meeting, for tribes to discuss what would be the best way to officially mark the events.
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox said there are several days that would work if we wanted to have a national holiday.
"They don't even have Queen's Birthday holiday in England but we do here, so I think we could utilise that better.
"There are more New Zealanders lost in the settling of this country than we lost in the First World War. We make no reference to that in the schooling of our tamariki".
