Brian Tamaki invites LGBT community to Destiny Church conference

Brian Tamaki has been a vocal opponent of gay marriage and and LGBT equality in recent years, but now he is inviting the rainbow community into his church.

Reportedly 50 members of the queer community have been invited to an upcoming Destiny Church conference, and offered the chance to address the congregation.

This is despite Tamaki and his wife, Hannah, having being outspoken in their thoughts on homosexuality.

In his sermon during which he blamed sin for the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, Tamaki quoted the Leviticus book of the Old Testament, which is most commonly linked to anti-gay Christian rhetoric.

Earlier this month, Hannah told Radio New Zealand she believed being gay was a sin "as much as somebody who beat their wife".

Many invitees have told the Herald they're not going to the "hypocritical" event, saying they've been told Tamaki won't be offering any apology for past comments.

Last week, Brian and Hannah announced they were launching their own political party, Coalition New Zealand, to take on the Government.
