Police have issued a statement about a "disgusting" new app promoting teen suicide after receiving two private messages about it via Facebook.

The 'Blue Whale' app is a new dangerous social media challenge and involves participants taking part in 50 days of self harm tasks, before they are ultimately instructed to kill themselves on the last day.

The app has been linked to more than 130 teenage suicides in Russia.

A police spokesperson told Newstalk ZB there have so far been no reports received of New Zealanders participating but they are seeking advice from experts about an investigation.

Police are encouraging parents to sit down with their children to discuss the dangers of viewing or engaging in this behaviour.
