UPDATED 11.41AM: The men’s Black Sticks have delivered a top notch performance when they needed it to join the women’s team in the quarter-finals in Rio.

New Zealand has beaten the previously undefeated Belgium 3-1 to secure fourth spot in the group.

They needed a win or a draw to go ahead of Great Britain, who’d drawn with Spain in the earlier game.

Coach Colin Batch says they were incredibly focused, and although they tried to put what happened in the other game out of their minds, but it kept coming over the PA.

Assuming Australia crushes Brazil, their reward is a quarter-final against Germany, who’ve won the last two gold medals.

Earlier, Kayla Whitelock scored a last minute equaliser to send the women's Black Sticks through to the quarter finals, drawing one-all with the top-ranked Netherlands side to move to second in its pool.

Coach Mark Hager pointed out that when they're in trouble they push Whitelock up front, where she always proves herself.

The women's side face China in their final pool game and a win would likely see them meet Australia in the quarter finals.
