The New Zealand sailing team is celebrating its equal best ever showing at an Olympics, four medals.

Kiwi sailors have won three medals today - gold to Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, and silver to Alex Maloney and Molly Meech, and Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie.

Burling and Tuke have won gold in the 49er class, winning the medal race two days after confirming top spot on the podium.

Burling said it's been an amazing regatta.

"We've got a great team. We're a really, really tight unit and to come away with four medals after such a tough week's racing is amazing for us as a team."

Burling said the team can now relax.

"Soaking up this moment. What an amazing week. It couldn't have gone better. Eight years of working towards this for it all to come together like that is an amazing feeling."

Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie have won silver in the women's 470s, a remarkable feat after two disqualifications.

Aleh said this has been an incredibly hard week and they've pushed through.

"Hugely satisfying. We crossed the line and we were just ecstatic. It just feels like we fought so hard and to actually get this, we didn't think it was possible a few days ago.

"Had some big lows in the middle of the event. So proud of Polly, so proud of the team that we could actually do this. It's amazing."

Powrie said there aren't any what ifs.

"Sometimes sport goes your way and sometimes it doesn't. For the most part, I'm just so proud of us as a team, of Jo and with the support of our coach Nathan that we could just battle on."

Alex Maloney and Molly Meech have claimed silver in the 49er FX, beaten by Brazil in the medal race.

The Brazilians took the lead on the penultimate leg and crossed the line two seconds ahead of the Kiwis.

They went into the regatta in fourth place, with four crews vying for gold, and Meech was pretty tense beforehand.

"I think to be honest it's the most nervous I've ever been going into a race. For us to go out and perform well, it's such a cool feeling."

Maloney said there is some disappointment it's not gold, but they've sailed well all week so can't be too upset.

"It's still pretty fresh and it was really close. Maybe we could have covered and what not but I guess we did all we could and that's good enough for us."

49er goal medalist Tuke is thrilled for Maloney and Meech.

"Super proud of them. We've done a lot of travelling together. An awesome day for New Zealand sailing."

Sam Meech won bronze in the Laser class early in the regatta.

All seven kiwi crews made the medal race for the top 10 boats in each class.

New Zealand last won four sailing medals in Barcelona in 1992.
