Auckland is expecting around 2.3 million people to converge on the city through a summer of events that includes festivals and international sporting fixtures.

Maori are going to have a festival of their own in Auckland this anniversary weekend.

For the first time people will be able to paddle a waka or sail on a double hulled waka on Auckland's waterfront.

It's all part of the city's summer of events that includes music festivals and sporting attractions like international cricket and the NRL Nines.

Mayor Len Brown is expecting the events to inject around 85 million dollars into the city's economy.

"That's thousands of jobs that adds considerably to the extra thirty-five thousand to fourty thousand jobs that we take on as a city a year, so the economic benefit, even though we we as ratepayers spend eight million dollars a year, there's a great return."

Mr Brown is expecting that to stimulate around 85 million dollars of economic activity and create thousands of jobs.

But there is a snag.

Mr Brown said while the city is prepared for the logistics of transportation , accommodation is an issue.

"The unintended consequence of success is that we are short of hotel rooms and there are presently either being built or on our books about to be built 5 new hotels in Auckland, and we need them quite frankly tomorrow."
