Customers affected by cancellation of Air New Zealand international flights are being advised to check details on the airlines website.
Air New Zealand has told the stock exchange there will be flight cancellations and delays every day over the coming weeks.
It's due to premature corrosion and wear and tear of the fan blades in the turbine of Rolls-Royce 787-9 engines.
House of Travel spokesman Brent Thomas said the timing is unfortunate.
"Obviously with school holidays starting this weekend, there will be a number of families who are hoping to get away. And unfortunately if this drags, it will lead into Christmas, which is certainly a busy time of year for people travelling overseas."
Air New Zealand is not the only airline around the world that will have to ground their aircraft.
It follows the grounding of the airlines Boeing 787-9s for maintenance, after engine abnormalities forced flights from Auckland to Japan and Argentina to return.
Geoff Thomas, editor in chief of airlinesratings.com, said the grounding is a result of an airworthiness directive by the American FFA and it's going cause major disruptions.
"Inspections have to bedone, replacements of blades have to done. There's also on top of that a worldwide shortage of spare engines."
Thomas said there's surplus planes in the northern hemisphere, as a lot of airlines park their planes because of the winter.
"I would imagine that Air NZ would probably charter two or three, probably Boeing 77's to replace the [grounded planes] and I would expect that Rolls Royce would pick up the cost."
