There's been a vote for change, from members of one of New Zealand's largest iwi.

Waikato-Tainui has confirmed results of a referendum about how its governed.

Seventy two percent have chosen the Marae Model over the status quo.

That will make management more accountable to the iwi's executive body, which in turn will be more accountable to iwi representatives.

The number of executive members and iwi representatives will also be reduced.
