Shoppers are looking for better labelling on processed foods, so they can see how much added sugar is in it.
A Consumer New Zealand survey shows 80 percent of people want sugars clearly shown on the ingredients list.
Chief executive Sue Chetwin said at the moment manufacturers only have to list the total amount of sugar.
"We think they should be separated out in the nutrition information panel, which is on all packaged foods, and obviously consumers want that as well."
Consumers also want to see the voluntary health star ratings on more food products, according to the survey.
Currently only 22 products display the ratings, which aim to make it easier for consumers to choose healthier options.
Chetwin said there's also some concern that manufacturers are milking the health-star ratings and consumers are cottoning on.
The ratings should be capped at a low level on foods high in sugar, saturated fat or sodium, she argues.
"One of the very good examples is Nutri-Grain, a breakfast food. It gets four stars, five is the top you can get, yet it is a quarter sugar."
