Long summer strolls with the dog could be hazardous if owners aren't vigilant.
Barley grass may seem innocuous but to our four legged friends, the seeds can be dangerous.
Christchurch Northlands Animal Care Hospital vet nurse Kim Pierce says they are treating between two to five dogs a week for barley grass seeds embedded in their skin.
"Last week a dog needed more than 20 incisions and stitches to remove a painful seed infestation."
Pierce says dog owners should avoid taking their pets into heavy long grass if possible and should check their pets for the dangerous spikes after walks.
