The discovery of asbestos at Christchurch's Art Centre's halted work while contractors are tested for possible exposure.

The potentially hazardous material was found in six rooms of the heritage building, which is undergoing restoration.

The buildings were extensively tested for the substance before work began.

CEO Andre Lovatt says now work will stop for up to a month while the asbestos is cleared and disposed of.
