Ōamaru is set to appear on screens around the world after the first teaser trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series East of Eden showcased the South Island locations used during filming.

The adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel of the same name, starring Florence Pugh, was filmed across Waitaki, Dunedin and Central Otago, with Ōamaru’s Victorian Precinct transformed into early 20th-century California for the production.

Filming took place in Ōamaru over two weeks last year, with filming spots including the Scottish Hall and the historic rail area near Friendly Bay.

The series was filmed for two weeks in Ōamaru as part of a wider South Island production.

Phil Turner, locations manager for The Search, who worked on Netflix’s East of Eden, said the region offered rare authenticity.

“These are incredibly unique locations that can replicate period settings in a way that’s very difficult to achieve elsewhere; you’d almost have to build a set to match somewhere like the Ōamaru Historic Precinct. It’s completely unique globally,” he said.

Sites in Dunedin, Maniototo and Ōamaru will feature in Netflix’s East of Eden.

“To find anything comparable in America, you’d almost have to travel the continent, but you can find it all right here.

“Maniototo and Central Otago are just extraordinary landscapes. They’re less developed and full of opportunity, from wide open spaces to historic homes.”

Filming across the South Island also included a weekend shoot in central Dunedin, and a further two weeks in the Maniototo between Naseby and Ranfurly.

Tourism Waitaki general manager Heather Matthews said the production reinforced the region’s appeal as part of the broader South Island screen offering.

“Ōamaru’s heritage streetscape is genuinely world-class, and it’s exciting to know it’s being featured alongside other South Island locations in a production of this scale,” said Matthews.

She said the benefits of hosting a major international production were felt both locally and across the wider region.

“Productions like this bring real economic benefits, from jobs and accommodation through to hospitality, and local services.

“They also deliver long-term value by building international awareness and encouraging future visitors to explore places like Waitaki.”

During filming, the main cast and crew spent time exploring the region, including visits to local sites such as Ōamaru Penguin Colony.

Matthews said local audiences will feel proud seeing local locations showcased on a global platform.

“There’s real pride in seeing Waitaki brought to life on screen. It’s a reflection of the community effort that went into supporting the production, and something locals can genuinely celebrate.”
