The novelist penned more than 20 books, the last of which was Jane Austin spin-off Death Comes to Pemberley.
Many featured sleuth Adam Dalgliesh.
She sold millions of books around the world, with various adaptations for television and film, including 'Children of Men' which starred Clive Owen.
