It seems Kiwi audiences are more excited by anime than there are by prestige drama.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly took out the top spot at the box office last weekend, figures from Numero reveal.

The anime adaptation earned $309,000 for its opening weekend, $50,000 ahead of the nearest competitors.

Meanwhile, Green Book had to settle for fourth place, despite earning five Oscar nominations.

Both movies opened in New Zealand on Thursday last week.

Madman Entertainment, who distributed Dragon Ball in New Zealand, shared the news on Facebook, writing it was the only English-speaking territory in the world where it achieved this feat.
