It may be the new king of the world, but Avengers: Endgame is unlikely to top the local box office.
The Marvel superhero flick became the highest grossing movie of all time over the weekend, having grossed US$2.9 billion - just sneaking past James Cameron's Avatar.
However, figures from the Motion Picture Distributor's Association show Endgame hasn't cracked the top three locally.
It has earned $14.47 million in New Zealand in the three months since its release, good enough for fourth place, but trailing behind Avatar's $17.3 million earnings.
Star Wars: the Force Awakens and Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring sit on second and third, on $14.63 and $14.6 million respectively.
Endgame likely won't be able to make the top position. The movie is currently not screening in any cinemas in and is scheduled for DVD release next month, according to MightyApe.Â
The Marvel blockbuster will have to contend with holding the record for highest grossing opening weekend of all time, with Box Office Mojo listing it as having made $4 million in its first few days in cinemas.Â
New Zealand's top five films at the box office:
