A man and a pregnant woman have been injured in a two-car crash soon after seven this evening just north of Kaiwaka in Northland.

The man was taken to hospital after being cut out of the vehicle he was in after receiving serious injuries.

The woman also had to be removed from the vehicle she was in by emergency services.

She has serious leg injuries and has been admitted to Whangarei Hospital.

Seven other people were involved in the crash and had minor injuries or were uninjured.

Fire, ambulance, and police are at the scene and the Westpac rescue helicopter is on standby.

Debris is littering the roadway for a hundred metres.

Only one lane is still open northbound.

Traffic's heavy in the area and there are no diversions in place.
