Two serious house fires in the upper South Island.
The first was at Gore Bay in North Canterbury at 9.30 last night.
A family escaped the house, but it was seriously damaged.
The second was in Otira at 1.30 this morning.
Fire spokesperson Andrew Norris says the house near Arthur's Pass was destroyed by the blaze that started from an open fire.
The single occupant was unhurt.
