Police are rolling out new breath testing technology, which will mean no more booze buses.
The new devices look and operate much like those currently used to check a drivers' breath for alcohol, but now they'll have additional software enabling them to return an evidential breath test result in a matter of seconds.
Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Dave Cliff, acknowledges it'll allow the full breath testing process to take place at the roadside, taking away the need to take a suspected drink driver to a booze bus or police station for an evidential breath test.
The first 200 devices will be rolled out this month to police in Bay of Plenty, Eastern, Central, Wellington and Southern Districts, with the remaining to be rolled out over the next three years.
