UPDATED 12.09pm One person has died while two others have been left battling serious injuries after a two car crash near Waiuku.

A St John spokesperson confirmed one person had died in the 11am crash, 500 metres north west of West Coast Road, on Awhitu Road.

Another person had suffered serious injuries while another has moderate injuries.

One ambulance is at the scene while another is currently on its way. A rescue helicopter has also been called.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesman said one of the occupants was currently trapped and firefighters were getting to work with rescue equipment.

Diversions are in place from Awhitu Road and Pollock Wharf Road.

There is no indication at this early stage as to how the crash has happened, and the Serious Crash Unit will carry out an investigation.
