A man has died after falling off the Whitiora Bridge in Hamilton.

Emergency services were called to the scene at just before 1.30 after a member of the public reported seeing a man fall.

Hamilton City Area Commander Inspector Greg Nicholls says two police officers spotted the man, jumped into the Waikato River and brought him ashore.

He says the man was non responsive when officers reached him and efforts to revive him onshore were unsuccessful.
