Updated 7.57pm: There are reports of multiple cars and LPG bottles burning in a major fire in Invercargill.

Fire and police are in attendance as they attempt to bring the blaze under control.

Malcolm Gayfer is at the scene, and says black smoke is billowing from the blaze.

"A huge pall of black smoke is heading eastwards, fanned by a strong westerly wind."

Malcolm Gayer says police are monitoring the scene as fire crews battle the blaze.

"Police have the immediate area cordoned off, and more fire appliances have been called in."

Police have cordoned off a number of streets in the area and are warning people to stay away.

A Police spokesperson says the smoke and fumes could be toxic and the fire could quickly deteriorate.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and dangerous.

All Invercargill fire appliances are being sent to the scene and extra crews are being called from other centres.

Dry conditions and strong westerly winds are fanning the flames.
