
A child has died after being hit by a car in Waikato this morning.
Emergency services have confirmed a child was hit by a car on State Highway 25.
Waikato police Senior Sergeant Stephen Ambler confirmed the toddler who died was 18-months-old.
He said it's too early to say how the toddler wandered from the house.
He confirmed the victim was the youngest of three siblings.
The parents were being comforted by victim support.
Tejinder Kaur, Waitakaruru Country Store owner said the parents owned a dairy farm and were working at the time.
Another neighbour was still visibly shaken by what she had seen and said it wasn't a very nice scene.
She understood the child may have been hit by more than one vehicle.
The Herald understands the victims siblings attend the nearby Waitakaruru School.
The schools principal said they had been "pretty rattled" by the death and declined to comment further.
The Ministry of Education traumatic incident team had just arrived at the school, he said.
The New Zealand Transport Agency posted a tweet advising State Highway 25 had been closed to all traffic at Waitakaruru.
