The country's largest education union wants to see more training for teachers dealing with increasingly violent situations.

It comes after a teacher was found guilty of misconduct for carrying a struggling boy to the principal's office.

Three distressed pupils approached the teacher before the incident, accusing the boy of hurting them.

NZEI Te Riu Roa President Lynda Stuart says it highlights hard decisions teachers have to make.

"The difficulty of it all is that teachers actually are trying to keep children safe, whether it be the child that is involved in the incident or other children that may be affected."

Stuart said the incident highlights that changes are needed.

Training is made available where we need it and that schools and teachers shouldn't have to wait for any training around a particular child or around a particular circumstance

Former principal Patrick Walsh told Larry Williams that the incident suggested a need to re-examine the rules.
