A Labour MP is calling on West Coast locals to support a "Save Salisbury School" event near Nelson this morning.
Minister of Education Hekia Parata announced she'll be starting consultations to shut the school down, after a previously failed attempt in 2013.
Salisbury School is a boarding school in Richmond for girls years 3 to 10, who have complex learning needs that aren't able to be met in their local communities.
Labour's West Coast Tasman MP Damien O'Connor said the Minister's ego has been challenged when she failed to get what she wanted the first time round.
"Through the Ministry, they've constrained access to the school, got down to a roll of ten and now the Ministry's saying 'Well, you might as well close it'," he said.
O'Connor said the school has fought for itself and now is the time for the community to stand up and make a statement.
"There are many, many people who know parents or know the girls themselves who've benefited so much from this school's existence."
The"Save Salisbury School" event will take place at 11am today.
