VIDEO: The family of Connor Morris embrace outside the court.

A jury has found Michael Murray guilty of the murder of Connor Morris.

The public gallery was full, with Mr Morris's family sitting in the front row.

Gia Garrick was in court, and reports that gasps could be heard from the public gallery as the verdict was read.

"Court security were lining the courtroom and standing outside the doors," she explained.

Murray admitted he hit Mr Morris with a sickle during a brawl in west Auckland last year, but claimed he acted to defend his brother.

Murray's lawyer Marie Dyhrberg has spoken to her client since the verdict.

"I'm not in a position to say much, but we're obviously very disappointed in it."

She said it's too early to decide whether they will appeal.

"He's quite devastated as one naturally would expect."

Mr Morris's partner, Millie Elder, said she's pleased the justice system has come through for him.

She posted on social media saying 'we all knew it, glad the justice system came through for you'.

She said she can't believe how happy she is about something so sad.

Ms Elder added while it doesn't bring Mr Morris back, for everyone who knew him, it means a little bit of closure.

The jury deliberated for just over four hours before reaching its verdict.

He'll be sentenced on the 11th of September.
