Updated 8.28am: A police chase that spanned almost the length of Auckland has ended with a car crashing into a concrete barrier on the southern motorway.
The chase began with a ram raid on a liquor store in Torbay just before one am.
Police say they pursued the stolen vehicle over the harbour bridge, but abandoned the chase due to dangerous speed.
Inspector Tony Wakelin says the car was slowed down by spikes at Mt Wellington, before it again entered the motorway going south in the northbound lane.
"Clearly put themselves and members of the public at huge risk in this dangerous manoeuvre. We abandoned the pursuit at this stage but later on they crashed into the median strip."
After that the car collided with a concrete barrier.
The three occupants ran off - and shortly after another car collided with the abandoned vehicle.
The driver of that car was not seriously hurt.
Police are still seeking the offenders.
