Police have confirmed they are investigating a location of interest in the search for British backpacker Grace Millane.

A full scene examination is underway in a bush area on Scenic Drive, in West Auckland.

Police are unable to confirm whether Millane's body has been located at this site.

A full road closure of Scenic Drive at the intersection of Mountain Road will be in place from 3 until 7 tonight.

A local woman, who Newstalk ZB agreed not to name, says she's seen a lot of police activity in the area this morning.

"We live in Turanga Road and basically it's a lay away, and there's a couple of tents and police present and cars."

She says the situation is heartbreaking.

"We're quite heartbroken with the young girl missing to be honest, it's a bit of a lump in our stomachs. We don't know what's going on really."
