Residents were urged to keep away from a West Auckland road this morning after a man allegedly fired shots from his Rānui home.

A local told the Herald he heard six gunshots coming from a Simpson Rd property at 9.40am.

Police cordoned off a portion of the road between Candia and Babich Rds at 10am while police appealed for the man to surrender.

A neighbour who called the police after hearing four gunshots said the incident has been very “unsettling” for them.

The man, who did not want to be named said he heard four gunshots at 9.40am, followed by two more a few minutes later.

“Within minutes there were about 15 police cars with armed officers and three ambulances,” he said

Lake Panorama Rd was then closed, he said.

“It’s very unsettling because this is supposed to be the safer side of Henderson, the gang pads are on the other side, " he said.

Another neighbour said it was like “a scene from a police drama”.

She said police were there for about three hours and telling residents to stay indoors.

The neighbour said she understood the matter to be a case involving an eviction, but the tenants refused to leave and put up a fight.

Another Simpson Rd resident said she saw police with rifles guarding the cordon.

There was a big police presence, she said, and the Eagle helicopter had been “roaming around for ages”.

No one was injured and the man surrendered to the police, charges are being considered.

A police spokesperson said people are being urged to avoid the area while police respond to the “incident”.

“Police would like to thank nearby residents impacted by this incident for their support as we worked to achieve a peaceful resolution,” a police spokesperson said.

Auckland Transport said stops of bus route 143 were missed due to the road closure, but buses are now returning to their usual route.
