A North Shore man who had up to $800,000 of methamphetamine at his Greenhithe home has been sent to jail for almost seven years.

Sen Zhang, 35, appeared in the Auckland District Court this morning on one charge of possession of methamphetamine for supply.

In September last year, police searched his Austin Rd home where he lived with his partner.

When police asked whether he had any meth, he said there was some in his girlfriend’s Mini car outside.

After searching the property, they found 800.6 grams of the drug with a street value of between $600,000 to $800,000.

They also found scales and plastic ziplock bags.

Zhang pleaded guilty to the charge and at sentencing today his lawyer, Ron Mansfield, said his plea and remorse should be taken into account.

Mansfield said Zhang also had debts and used the drug but was undergoing rehabilitation so was unlikely to reoffend.

Zhang told police he was “looking after it for someone else”.

Judge Neville Dawson said Zhang was involved in the proliferation of an “extremely harmful drug” and that needed to be taken into account.

Dawson said he also noted that Zhang's elderly parents in China were "clearly shocked and surprised" at their son's offending.

Zhang was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison.
