Updated 3:25pm: Canterbury's District Commander says police accept the finding one of their officers should have abandoned a car chase earlier.

Mongrel Mob member Fabian Mika was sentenced last year to six years and nine months in prison for causing the death of his 15-year-old passenger.

The chase through the streets of Christchurch covered nine kilometres and lasted almost six minutes, with Mika reaching speeds of 150 kilometres an hour.

Chair Judge Sir David Carruthers says the officer's decision to pursue Mika up the wrong side of a road at end of the pursuit posed an unjustified risk to the public.

He also failed to hear two orders from police communications to stand down

But Sir David says this tragic incident was caused by the actions of Mika, who was an unlicensed driver at the time.

Superintendent Gary Knowles says Mika chose not to stop.

"We totally accept the finding of the IPCA and as District Commander I fully support their findings.

"This is a really, really tragic situation and my heart goes out to the family that lost their 15-year-old son."
